Grace and peace to you from our Lord Jesus Christ- the restorer of peace and hope:

Northern Great Lakes Synod Bishop Katherine Finegan recently reminded us that during this season of Lent that happens to be in a time of uncertainty and isolation, we will be fasting from being together as a worshiping community, and fasting from receiving our sacraments, particularly that of Holy Communion.  While the Word of God can be communicated without bread and wine, and without being in each other’s presence, we will be fasting from celebrating it together for an undetermined time.  To “fast” is to “refrain from.”  During Lent we also think of repentance, or “turning away” from that which separates us from God, and “turning toward” God, our neighbor, creation, essentially anything that helps us be in God’s presence in a positive way.  Fasting can be an important and effective way to clear away that which separates us, so that “a way toward” is clear and open, free of obstacles.  It is helpful to think of fasting as relying on something other than what is normal during this time when our “normal” has been severely disrupted.  We can use this time of distance and separation from one another as “turning toward” God. There have been people throughout history who have chosen a life of solitude for this purpose.  I think of the early Desert Fathers and Mothers of the third century and the monastics of the middle ages. Some distanced themselves by choice, others were forced. Julian of Norwich lost her entire family to the plague of Black Death. In her isolation of illness she received several visions of Christ’s compassionate love. Her book, Revelations of Divine Love, captures a depth of spiritual insight unprecedented in her time with words that still speak to us today. Perhaps now is the time to cultivate a spiritual discipline we have been too busy to practice. A time of sitting in the quiet without trying to fix anything. A time to turn away from the busyness and turn toward that which helps us be in God’s presence. May the peace of Christ be with your always, Pastor Julie
