Green Burials and Home Funerals ~ news from pastor julie. . .
Would it surprise you if I told you almost 90% of the funerals I do come without a plan from the family. People put off planning for death for many reasons, but knowing all the options and pre-planning can make this important event even more meaningful. Most of us seek the services of a funeral director to either embalm or cremate as it seems that is just the way it is done. There is a third option, green burial.
Over the last two years, Pastor Bucky and myself have attended workshops and meetings provided by the Keweenaw Green Burial Association. They have made tremendous strides in seeking cooperation from funeral directors and cemeteries to offer this option to those who simply want to go back to the basics: naturally decomposing in the ground. At this time there are lots available at the Chassell Township Cemetery and a green burial section is being prepared at Forest Hills in Houghton.
The last workshop Bucky and I attended focused on home funerals. Caring for our loved ones’ bodies after they are deceased is an expression of love, memory, and letting go. But to do either or both (green burial/home funeral) one must plan ahead! Let your family, pastor, a funeral director know your wishes. They may not be privy to this third option so you may need to educate them.
